How many choices do you have when building a Warhammer 40k army?

By choices, I mean "elite" choices, "troop" choices, "HQ" choices, etc etc. By choices, I mean "elite" choices, "troop" choices, "HQ" choices, etc etc. And by army, I mean Space Marines.

  1. Strictly, it depends upon the scenario, as different scenarios can require different mandatory and optional choices. However, the "standard" force organization (forceorg) chart requires a minimum of one (1) HQ choice and two (2) Troops choices. In addition, you may take up to one (1) additional HQ choice (up to a maximum of 2), up to four (4) additional Troops choices (up to a maximum of 6) and up to three (3) choices from each of Elites, Heavy Support and Fast Attack. This isn't expected to change in 5th Edition. That said, I know many players and clubs that allow for an additional (third) HQ choice beyond the two. In addition, variant armies ascribe different limitations (for example, my Dark Angels 2000 point army, led by Belial, Master of the Deathwing, can take Terminators (usually an Elites choice) as Troops). Finally, the "Apocalypse" Warhammer 40,000 game variant permits a much more flexible forceorg that groups similar units into detachments.
